Will your customers wait for your application or webpages to load? Will they return to a slow website? Most customers won’t do either. Almost half the users who visit a website will abandon it if it takes longer than 3 seconds to load, and close to 80% of visitors are less likely to return to a slow website. We want you to be confident about the performance of your applications and your website so that you don’t have to worry about losing customers.
As companies shift to web-based applications and e-commerce, they increasingly rely on open-source databases, especially MySQL, to manage and to serve their business data. And cloud database services that are based on MySQL are available on every major public cloud. Application performance largely depends on database performance, so applications require persistent, durable storage to get their job done.

Reliable, high-performance storage is where NetApp® Cloud Volumes Service can help. Whether you’re accessing the primary database or a snapshot copy, you can expect excellent, consistent performance from NetApp Cloud Volumes Service.

And we’re not just making empty promises. We tested MySQL with NetApp Cloud Volumes Service by using the TPC Benchmark C (TPC-C) workload generator that leverages actual MySQL databases and their I/O paths. TPC-C standardized on an 80/20 read/write workload, so our test results are based on that load.

We tested two scenarios in this environment. The first evaluated the capabilities of a single instance to drive MySQL I/O, and the second set out to determine the edges of a single cloud volume. The results of both scenarios are shown in the following chart. The gray line represents the single-instance environment, and the blue line represents the multi-instance environment.

MySQL
When it was run against the single instance, TPC-C generated approximately 4.5Gbps worth of I/O with Cloud Volumes Service, which approaches the Amazon inter-Virtual Private Cloud limit that’s imposed per network connection. Run against multiple instances, TPC-C generated about 16Gbps of throughput against a single cloud volume, which is a rate that could definitely help speed up your business and dramatically lower your customers’ wait time.

Of course, performance isn’t the whole story. Data is a crown jewel of any enterprise and must be durable and secure. NetApp Cloud Volumes Service also provides the data durability and security that you need, and better yet, it’s all managed for you! Add to these benefits the advantage of accessing your data directly from any zone within the region, and you will find that NetApp Cloud Volumes Service is the optimal solution for your MySQL needs.
